Pôda v okolí krušpánu by mala byť mulčovaná.Šetrí to náščas a krušpánu to pomáha. Mulčovaním krušpán chránime pred rastom burín a výkyvmi počasia. Tiež ním znižujeme odparovanie vody z pôdy a udržujeme kyprosť pôdy. Mulčovaním rastlín v okolí cca 30-50cm v okolí rastlín minimalizujeme súperenie o vodu s koreňmi okolitých tráv.
Pri starostlivosti o krušpán sa zväčša zaujímame o vonkajší vzhľad rastliny. Ak však nahliadneme čo sa skrýva vo vnútri jeho habitusu tesne nad zemou, zvlášť ak sa o to nezaujímame pravidelne, môžeme byť prekvapený.
Po určitej dobe zvyšky starého mulčovacieho materiálu prestanú plniť svoj účel a i keď je krušpán označovaný ako neopadavý, predsa len z času na čas nejaký ten lístok stratí. Takéto prostredie dáva okrem iného aj predpoklad pre vznik rôznych ochorení ktoré sa môžu prejaviť na vzhľade rastliny. Z toho dôvodu v určitých intervaloch odstraňujeme takýto rozkladajúci sa materiál čo spojíme zároveň kyprením. Takúto úpravu stačí vykonať raz za niekoľko rokov podľa potreby a pravidelne sledovať stav rozkladu mulču, ktorý môžeme priebežne dopĺňať.
Z povrchu odstránime všetko opadnuté lístie a iný rozkladajúci sa materiál a tiež zvyšky starého mulčovacieho materiálu tak, aby sme sa dostali až na povrch zeminy. Zeminu v okolí krušpánov prekypríme. Pri starších rastlinách drobné poranenie koreňov na povrchu pôdy príliš nevadí. Dôležitejšie je, aby sa uľahnutá vrchná vrstva zeminy narušila.
Po starostlivom prekyprení pôdu obohatíme o kvalitný kompost. Organické hnojivo má tiež schopnosť udržiavať v pôde vlhkosť a celkovo zlepšuje štruktúru pôdy a iné pôdne vlastnosti.
Ako mulčovací materiál môžeme použiť farebnú štiepku alebo rôzne druhy kôr. Na obrázku je obyčajná smreková kôra z blízkeho rúbaniska.
Mulčovaním rastlín v okolí približne 30-50cm minimalizujeme súperenie o vodu s koreňmi okolitých tráv a tiež znižujeme jej odparovanie z povrchu. Takto ošetrený krušpán má omnoho menšie nároky na zavlažovanie.
Pri stanovení množstva a frekvencie doplnkového zavlažovania treba brať do úvahy aj blízkosť okolitých stromov a kríkov. Korene stromov v blízkosti krušpánov sa môžu rozšíriť na väčšiu vzdialenosť a tak súťažiť o vodu v mieste výsadby krušpánu. I keď je krušpán odolný prechodnému suchu, mal by sa zavlažovať. Rastliny stresované suchom často neskôr podľahnú rôznym patogénom, alebo ochabnú v raste na niekoľko mesiacov, alebo aj rokov po vystavení stresu.
Poskytnutie vhodnej pôdy, vlhkosti a svetelných podmienok má za následok zdravé rastliny. Zlý zdravotný stav a choroby súčasto výsledkom príliš veľa vody (nedostatočné odvodnenie, príliš veľa zavlažovania), sucha, alebo pri niektorých kultivaroch stres s prílišného slnka.
